Expectant mothers have so many different things they have to watch out for when they are pregnant; the food, they eat, the medications they take, the activities they engage in, and even the position they sleep in.
For many mothers to be getting a good night’s sleep can be challenging. As their baby starts growing inside of them the weight and size of the fetus can make it hard to find a comfortable position to sleep in. They toss and turn through the night unable to find a sleeping position that feels comfortable to them. But choosing the correct sleeping position during pregnancy is not just about comfort.
Finding the correct position to sleep in during pregnancy also is a health concern for both mother and baby. Doctors have a recommended sleeping position for expectant mothers. It is the side sleeping position and particularly the left side. Why is this?
Lying on your left side when pregnant is actually good for the expectant mother and her baby. It improves the flow of blood and nutrients to the placenta. It also takes pressure off of your major organs like your kidneys. This allows the kidneys to efficiently eliminate waste products from your body. It also keeps the weight of the baby off of your liver.
Sleeping on your back puts the weight of the baby directly on the spine, intestines, and inferior vena cava (the large vein that carries blood from the lower body to the heart). This can lead to backaches and hemorrhoids.
Some women find it difficult to maintain the side position. It may not be a position they find natural or comfortable to them, especially if they are used to being back or tummy sleepers. They may still wake in the night finding themselves on their backs, no matter how hard they try to sleep on their side. But there is a simple tool pregnant mothers can use to comfortably sleep in the correct position.
The best thing an expectant mother can use to maintain the side position is a maternity pillow. Maternity pillows are pillows that are specially designed to support the weight of the baby and to keep the expectant mother in the correct position throughout the night. They also lead to a more comfortable nights sleep because, by maintaining the correct sleeping positions during pregnancy, many of the discomforts a pregnant woman feels when sleeping are eliminated.
