There are a number of cures for insomnia but in this article I will state my top insomnia cures. These include a number of natural and unnatural methods but all are tried and tested to produce great results.

1. The first is simply getting into a routine, your body and mind for that matter, likes routine, if you can go to sleep at a certain point each day and wake up and the same point after a while it will become a lot easier to get up early, even if you do not suffer from insomnia you must know that. This is because your body adapts to the times you need awake and asleep. People usually notice this pattern when starting a new job, in the first few weeks it is difficult to adapt but after a while you get used to it and hence find it easier.

2. Exercise – This is an important part to generally stay healthy, everyone knows that exercise is important for general life but in terms of insomnia exercise is important for a number of reasons, the first is that it simply tires you out so when it comes to going to sleep you will find it easier as your body is more tired. The next is that exercise helps relieve stress, which if you have read any of my previous insomnia articles you know is the number one cause for insomnia.

3. Relaxation – This can be broken down to 3 main processes the first is simple anything that relaxes you this can be a warm bath, relaxing outside with a book or simple speaking to your family. The second is body relaxation; this may be getting a massage or going for a swim or a run. The third is what I like to call mind relaxation for me I always choose meditation but again you may choose reading a book or yoga, whatever your preference is.

4. Temperature – It is important to keep your body temperature constantly warm but not too hot. If you have ever tried to fall asleep outdoors or in a very hot country without any air conditioning you will know that if you are at an uncomfortable position you will not be able to sleep as your body is not the optimum temperature for sleep. An important point to remember is that your sleep receptors are in your feet so if your feet are cold you will struggle to get to sleep.…

Coping With Fatal Familial Insomnia

Fatal familial insomnia is an autosomal dominant inherited prion disease of the brain and is a rare condition. Also known as the FFI sleep disorder, the disease can develop in a patient spontaneously but is most often inherited and onset is typically seen between the ages of 30 and 60. The condition follows four stages starting with insomnia and moving on to hallucinations, a complete inability to sleep and finally dementia that often results in death.

Initially patients typically exhibit mild symptoms of increasing insomnia. A growing lack of sleep however leads many patients to experience panic attacks and phobias which can develop to the point where they feel unsafe and are unable to cope with their normal daily routine. They then start to hallucinate and the overwhelming stress they feel makes it even more difficult to sleep and locks them into a vicious cycle.

At this point it is common for patients to be prescribed sleeping pills but, in many cases, sleeping pills are not the answer and can in fact make the condition worse. The problem here is that this condition is so rare that it is often not diagnosed correctly in its initial stages and there are only a very few treatments available which will work to a greater of lesser degree depending upon the individual patient. Once the third stage of the disease is reached and the patient is experiencing an almost complete inability to sleep rapid weight loss usually occurs and dementia sets in within three months or less.

There is no cure for the disease but there are some effective treatments available which can help offer relief to patients. With treatment patients are often able to live a relatively normal life and avoid depression and the final state of dementia.

If you believe that you may be suffering from fatal familial insomnia then you should talk to your doctor without delay because the disease can progress rapidly and, once in its final stages, there is often no effective treatment. Although it must be taken seriously, you should not automatically assume that this disease is terminal and proper treatment can relieve its symptoms and, at the very least, improve your quality of life and buy you time. However, because the condition can progress very rapidly, and run through all four stages in some patients in a little over six months, you should not delay in seeking medical attention.

Finally, it should be remembered that fatal familial insomnia sufferers are aware of what is going on around them throughout all but the very final days of the disease and that it is important that have the love and support of their family and friends.…

How Essential Are Vitamins?

Because of our lifestyle we are always on the go. Many times we prefer either fast food or instant food. However, these foods are often times full of sodium which causes excess water in our system. Instant food and fast food also contain artificial flavorings and colorings too. All these our body never needed. Unfortunately we get less healthy because of these unhealthy diets additions. I wish there would be restaurants that would offer healthy to-go food!
There are times before when I was still in college and it seemed that I simply did not have enough time to eat healthy food. So what I did one day was, on my way home I went to the supermarket and bought different fruits that I wanted to bring to school just so I would be able to compensate for the lost nutrients that I do not get from the food from the school’s cafeteria. I also brought with me multi vitamins to complete it. During my free time I would make it a point to eat more fruits and vegetable salad and made dressings by myself. I would make enough batches of dressings that I would be able to choose from whenever I have to go to school already. After making this as a regular regimen of mine I felt more energetic at school. My mental as well as physical performance got better, which was really great.
Now that I am already working I am still doing the healthy regime that I have done when I was a college student. Being healthy is something that I really need to be because nobody will take care of me except myself. I owe it to myself to be healthy. I always think that health really is wealth. Because there was a time unfortunately because of over fatigue at work and stress too I was down with flu for almost a week. During those times that I sick, I still stuck to eating healthy and had vegetable salads. I also added vitamins because it would complete what is lacking from the food that we eat, especially if we do not eat fish, meat or poultry that much, so basically some nutrients are still missing. Adding vitamins to our daily meal I would say is essential either we are still at school or during our retirement years.…

Overcoming Barriers to Eating For Seniors

As we age, many factors interfere with proper nutrition.
– Can’t chew.
– Upset stomach
– Can’t shop.
– Can’t cook.
– No appetite.
– Short on money.
Eating well is important. You can overcome these barriers.
Problem – Can’t Chew
Trouble with chewing is a common problem of many seniors. Meats may feel tough and difficult to get down.
Try fruit or vegetable juices, Canned fruits that are soft (peaches, pears, or applesauce), Mashed vegetables (potatoes or carrots are good examples), Creamed vegetables in soups (potato soup, cream of broccoli soup), Ground meats (gravy makes these go down easier), Alternate proteins (eggs, bean soup, milk, cheese), and Creamed fruits (mix softer fruits with yogurt or cottage cheese).
Problem – Upset stomach
Excess gas and a sensitive stomach may keep you away from some foods you identify as problems (and these are often your favorites).
Try other foods like milk or creamed soups. Also you might wish to try foods that you have never tried before. Be sure to include adequate protein. This is often lacking in people with stomach upset. See your health care provider if your problem continues.
Problem – Can’t Shop
You may be less mobile than you used to be. Perhaps you don’t drive any longer. You may be unable to stand or walk around much.
Some grocery stores deliver. Call around. Some may do it for free. Ask members of your church to help. Some are just waiting for the opportunity to be helpful and do your grocery shopping for you. Ask your minister or pastor. Sometimes they will know of volunteer groups that may do your shopping. Ask your family or neighbors. Ask your health care provider. You may be eligible for home health services. Many of them can do your shopping.
Problem – Can’t cook
You may have trouble standing at the stove or holding the utensils. Cooking may seem like too much trouble.
Try using a microwave oven. You can now cook TV dinners, pizza, vegetables and a large variety of foods there. Check the yellow pages for meals on wheels or delivery through a senior center. Ask family members or friends to help you.
Problem – No appetite
Sometimes cooking for one person just makes you lose your appetite. You may feel lonely. Some medicines may make food tasty funny or strange.
Go to the local senior center to eat. Check with your health care provider. Ask about your medications and food flavor. Spice it up a bit. Add additional spices. Try new spices. Visit friends and family for meals. Shared meals offer companionship and allow you to share gossip as well as food.
Problem – Just Don’t Have The Money
Look in the ads for foods on sale. Buy staples such as dried beans, rice, and pasta. Use coupons. Or join a coupon exchange to find coupons on foods that you normally eat. Try generic or store brand foods. Eat at the local senior center. See if you are eligible for food stamps.
