The months when soft shelled blue crabs are in abundance are during the months of May and September. It is only during late spring and early fall that these blue crabs will be very productive and will have soft shells, and this is because these are the months when they are in their molting stage. And this is the reason why this is the best time to purchase soft shelled blue crabs since the supply is abundant.
As crabs grow older, the also grow bigger and since their shells don’t grow big with them, then need to break their old shell and start growing a new and bigger one. Swallowing a lot of water to make their bodies bigger is how a crab breaks out of its old shell. Once out, it takes around 10 minutes before the process of forming a new shell starts. The shell then hardens after a few days. We want to catch these blue crabs before their shell hardens.
